THINGS TO DO
IN ELKO
There’s no single way to adventure in Elko, and that’s just the way we like it. One moment you’re hiking alpine trails in the Ruby Mountains, the next you’re swapping stories over a Basque meal or strolling the mural walk downtown. Maybe your adventures lead to the rodeo, heli-skiing, or Nevada’s oldest running casino. Maybe you’ll do it all. In Elko, the West still has plenty of surprises left to share.
Ruby Mountains & Lamoille Canyon
The Ruby Mountains define Elko’s horizon, glacier-carved peaks often called Nevada’s “Swiss Alps.” Drive the Lamoille Canyon Scenic Byway, where wildflowers spill across the slopes in summer and aspens blaze gold in fall. Hike the Ruby Crest Trail, fish alpine lakes, or simply take in the stillness. The canyon road is typically open from late spring to early fall, depending on snow conditions, so check the road conditions before you go.
Events in Elko
Time your visit for the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, when stories and songs echo through the Western Folklife Center. Feast and dance with Basque families at their annual festival, or cheer on riders at Nevada’s oldest rodeo, the Silver State Stampede. From the Elko Mining Expo to local fairs and live music, every season brings its own reason to celebrate.
Uncommon Adventures
Adventure in Elko doesn’t follow a script. Explore ghost towns where the past lingers in weathered wood and dust. Watch silver spurs being forged by hand, or test your luck at one of Nevada’s oldest running casinos. Tee off under high desert skies, or take on the thrill of heli-skiing in the Rubies. Out here, uncommon isn’t the exception — it’s the way we do things.
Arts & Musuems
Elko’s creative spirit runs as deep as its roots. Step into the Western Folklife Center, where cowboy poetry keeps the West alive. Visit the Northeastern Nevada Museum or the California Trail Interpretive Center to meet the past face to face. Downtown, 50+ murals and Centennial Boots add color to our streets. See if you can spot them all!
