The Ruby Mountains define Elko’s horizon, glacier-carved peaks often called Nevada’s “Swiss Alps.” Drive the Lamoille Canyon Scenic Byway, where wildflowers spill across the slopes in summer and aspens blaze gold in fall. Hike the Ruby Crest Trail, fish alpine lakes, or simply take in the stillness. The canyon road is typically open from late spring to early fall, depending on snow conditions, so check the road conditions before you go.

Time your visit for the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering, when stories and songs echo through the Western Folklife Center. Feast and dance with Basque families at their annual festival, or cheer on riders at Nevada’s oldest rodeo, the Silver State Stampede. From the Elko Mining Expo to local fairs and live music, every season brings its own reason to celebrate.

Adventure in Elko doesn’t follow a script. Explore ghost towns where the past lingers in weathered wood and dust. Watch silver spurs being forged by hand, or test your luck at one of Nevada’s oldest running casinos. Tee off under high desert skies, or take on the thrill of heli-skiing in the Rubies.
