Winter Recreation
Developed, public campgrounds are scattered throughout the Elko area. Most are managed by the U.S. Forest Service or the Bureau of Land Management and have daily camping fees posted. The majority of undeveloped areas on public lands are also open to camping.
Lamoille Canyon Scenic BywayTravels through these towering, rugged peaks. The glacially formed canyon winds around Ruby Dome Mountain, highest peak in the range at 11,387 feet, and is filled with spectacular scenery. Thomas Canyon Campground has over 40 overnight sites, for both RV's and tents.Distance from Elko: 25 miles (40.3 km) Services: Limited services available in Lamoille (13 miles) Map: #1 on map South Fork State Recreation AreaNevada's newest State Park features a 90-foot high dam restraining a 1,650 acre reservoir. A developed campground has 25 campsites.Distance from Elko: 16 miles (25.8 km) Services: Limited services available in Spring Creek (5 miles) Map: #2 on map Angel Lake Scenic BywayA small blue jewel nestled in the East Humboldt Range, Angel Lake is the only alpine lake accessible by paved road in the area. Main campground has 26 overnight camping sites with 18 additional sites at Angel Creek.Distance from Elko: 58 miles (06.7 km) Services: All services available in Wells (8 miles / 13.4 km) Map: #3 on map Wild Horse State Recreation AreaThis recreation area is centered on the northwest shore of Wild Horse Reservoir. Area offers beautiful views of the Independence Range. Several developed campground areas to choose from.Distance from Elko: 70 miles (112.7 km) Services: All services available Map: #4 on map South Ruby CampgroundPerched in the foothills of the southern Ruby Mountains overlooking the Ruby Lake National Wildlife Refuge, this 35 campsite facility is located in a pinyon pine and juniper setting. Bird watching, fishing hunting and just relaxing are popular at this site. Also, associated with the campground is a fish cleaning facility and RV sanitary station.Distance from Elko: 65 miles (104.7 km) Services: None available Map: #5 on map BLM Campgrounds• Tabor Creek - 30 miles northwest of Wells on mostly gravel road. Elevation 6,000 feet, 10 campsites, tables, fire rings, toilet facilities, no drinking water, fee $2 accessible mid April - late November.• Zunino / Jiggs Reservoir - 30 miles southeast of Elko via state route 227 to state route 228. Elevation 5,600 feet. Open camping on north and south shores only. Tables, grills, toilet facilities in day use area, no drinking water, fee $2 • Wilson Reservoir - 83 miles northwest of Elko via state route 225 to state route 226, the last 16 miles on gravel road. Elevation 5,300 feet, 15 camp sites, tables, fire ring, toilet facilities, dump station, hand pump water, boat ramp, fee $2 per visit, camping $4 per vehicle per night. Accessible late April - October. • North Wildhorse Campground - 70 miles north of Elko on state route 225. Elevation 6,200 feet, 18 campsites, tables, fire rings, grills, three group sites, toilet facilities, hand pump water, gravel roads, camping fee is $6 per night, per vehicle. Drinking water not available. Open late May - October. |
